A lot of times as a Photographer or Videographer we need to utilize the backgrounds within the location. Sure group shot at a wedding can sometimes have no interesting background. However, if you give yourself a second to examine a location you can use a background that would be better than just a group standing at a table or a boring white wall. Utilize your area, scan the location for places to take groups or subject for a more creative image. I like to get to a location early. I do so to look at options for a backdrop. Give yourself time to walk around and discover places within the area you may not see if you just get there on time. Just a little prep work can lead to better image or video an in doing so, make you at your craft.

The On-the-Fly Photographer: Why Finding Locations in a Flash is a Crucial Skill

To think of the fly is an art

In the world of photography, preparation is often lauded as paramount. Scouting locations, planning shoots, and meticulously crafting every detail is certainly valuable. But what happens when opportunity strikes unexpectedly? That's where the ability to find stunning locations on the fly becomes an indispensable skill, separating good photographers from truly adaptable and resourceful ones.

           The Power of Spontaneity:

Life rarely unfolds according to a pre-planned schedule. A breathtaking sunset, an unexpected encounter, or a sudden burst of inspiration can arise at any moment. Being able to capitalize on these fleeting opportunities requires a photographer who can quickly assess their surroundings and identify potential backdrops. This "on-the-fly" location scouting isn't just about convenience; it's about embracing the unexpected and capturing authentic moments that might otherwise be missed.

           Why On-the-Fly Location Scouting Matters:

            Captures Authentic Moments:

Spontaneous shoots often lead to more natural and genuine images. When subjects aren't posed or overly directed, their personalities shine through.

            Enhances Creativity:

Being forced to work with what's available can push you to think outside the box and find creative solutions. Limitations can breed innovation.

            Develops Resourcefulness:

Learning to quickly assess a location's potential trains your eye to see beauty in unexpected places. You'll become more adept at finding hidden gems and making the most of any environment.

            Improves Adaptability:

The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is crucial in photography. Whether it's weather, lighting, or unexpected crowds, you'll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

            Adds a Sense of Adventure:

Embracing spontaneity can make photography more exciting and rewarding. The thrill of discovering a perfect location in a fleeting moment is an experience unlike any other.

Tips for Mastering On-the-Fly Location Scouting:

            Train Your Eye:

Pay attention to your surroundings wherever you go. Look for interesting textures, light patterns, and compositions. The more you observe, the better you'll become at recognizing potential photo opportunities.

            Carry Your Camera:

You never know when inspiration will strike, so always have your camera with you. Even a quick snapshot on your phone can help you remember a location for a future shoot.

            Be Observant:

Pay attention to the details. A seemingly mundane location can offer surprising photographic potential if you look closely enough.

            Think Creatively:

Don't be afraid to experiment with different angles, perspectives, and compositions. A location that looks uninspiring at first glance might reveal its beauty from a different viewpoint.

            Utilize Natural Light:

Learn to read natural light and how it interacts with different environments. Understanding how light changes throughout the day will help you identify the best times to shoot.

            Embrace Imperfection:

Don't expect every on-the-fly location to be perfect. Sometimes, the imperfections are what make a location unique and interesting.

            Practice Regularly:

The more you practice on-the-fly location scouting, the better you'll become at it. Make it a habit to look for potential photo opportunities wherever you go.

           From Everyday to Extraordinary:

The ability to find compelling locations on the fly isn't just a technical skill; it's a mindset. It's about being open to the possibilities, embracing the unexpected, and seeing the world through a photographer's eye. By honing this skill, you'll not only capture stunning images but also develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty that surrounds you, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, one spontaneous shot at a time.

Your voice can be the most powerful tool a photographer can have. You need it to be confidently clear and loud enough for others to hear. Its needed to coral groups together, to give direction, and to crack a little humor in the air to create smiles. Far to many times have I seen shy photographers not being able to express what they wanted. Using your fingers to point can help but it doesn't always help every situation. Clients use us cause we know what we are doing. Be confident and let that be heard in your voice. It'll elevate your quality and your career will grow in the process.

So when you're a new photographer, framing can be a place where people overlook. I remember starting out & being more concerned I have only the subject in frame. While I still do this & it cam create great images if done properly. Framing just the subject can lead to lost potential. Instead of focusing on just the main subject. Look around, zoom out or walk back(prime lens) up. Find something in the background, frame that background with the subject & you have a complete new story. Perhaps put the subject not centered & have that background fill more of the screen. Get the camera lower, tilt up, remember to frame & now you have amazing images from multiple angles & framing that a client would love.
